I agree with Heather; Valentine’s Day is definitely not needed to show someone how much you love/like them. Valentine’s Day has become a “hallmark holiday”, a reason for people to go out and spend a ton of money on cards and gifts to show people how much they care, when all they really need to do is tell the person they are with how much they care.
